Mobility scooter vs electric trike: if you're shopping for a parent who is slowing down but still wants to get to the store or the park on their own, that's the first decision, not the brand. It's whether they need a mobility scooter (sit down, steer, go) or an electric trike (a three-wheel bike with a motor that helps you pedal). They solve different problems, and buying the wrong one is an expensive mistake to undo.
We checked prices on two direct-to-consumer stores on October 30, 2026, and re-checked them on November 1, 2026: Hoverfly, which sells folding mobility scooters, and Mooncool, which sells folding electric trikes aimed at older riders. We also read both stores' shipping, return and warranty pages. We haven't ridden these models, so this guide is about prices, specs the stores list and the fine print.

Mooncool (mooncool.com) sells folding electric trikes for adults and seniors, plus the POP folding e-bike and a kids' trike, with free U.S. shipping, a lifetime frame warranty and a 2-year battery warranty.
The quick answer
- Choose a mobility scooter if your parent has trouble with balance, can't pedal for long, or mostly makes short trips on sidewalks and in stores. The cheapest we found was the Hoverfly T3 at $549.99 (listed at $699.99). It weighs 61 lb and folds to fit in a car.
- Choose an electric trike if your parent can still get on a bike-style seat, pedal and steer, and wants longer rides. Mooncool's TK2 was $1,499.99 (listed at $2,099.99), with a 450 lb max load and a stated range of 35 to 60 miles.
- Not sure? Pick the scooter. It asks less of the rider, it costs about a third as much, and a scooter that gets used beats a trike that sits in the garage.
Prices and specs side by side
Model | Price (Nov 1) | Range the store lists | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
Hoverfly T3 scooter | $549.99 (was $699.99) | 13 miles | 61 lb, 3.7 mph, folds |
Hoverfly T4 scooter | $599.99 (was $1,019.99) | 12.4 miles | 4 wheels, 330 lb max |
Hoverfly T5 scooter | $949.99 (was $1,499.99) | 16.8 miles | 4 wheels, 5 mph, 350W |
Mooncool TK2 trike | $1,499.99 (was $2,099.99) | 35–60 miles | 450 lb max, about 90 lb |
Mooncool TK Pro trike | $1,699.99 (was $2,599.99) | see store page | 450 lb max, some colors sold out |
Hoverfly also sells two-packs: two T4s were $1,039.98 and a T4 plus a T3 was $967.46 when we checked, which helps if both parents want one. Mooncool's Halloween campaign took $120 off automatically on orders of $2,000 or more, but that campaign was set to end on November 1, 2026, and a single trike didn't qualify anyway. The T5 dropped from $999.99 to $949.99 between October 30 and November 1; the other prices in the table didn't change.
Mobility scooter vs electric trike: how they really differ
Effort. A mobility scooter needs no pedaling at all. You sit in a chair-style seat and use a hand control. An e-trike is still a bicycle: the motor helps, but the rider has to mount it, keep their feet on the pedals and steer with handlebars. If your parent hasn't ridden a bike in years, try a rental trike before you buy one.
Speed and distance. Scooters are built to go walking pace and a bit faster. Hoverfly lists 3.7 mph for the T3, 4.7 mph for the T4 and 5 mph for the T5, with about 12 to 17 miles per charge. That's plenty for errands, but not for a ride across town. Mooncool's trikes are made for longer rides; the TK2 page lists 35 to 60 miles, while the store's sale cards say up to 75, so expect the lower number.
Weight and storage. The T3 weighs 61 lb and folds. The TK2 is about 90 lb out of the box. If the vehicle has to go into a car trunk, the scooter is far easier, and someone strong will still need to lift it.
Where it's used. Scooters work best on flat pavement and inside stores. Trikes handle longer paths and bike lanes better, but they're wider than a regular bike and need a garage or shed.
The fine print that changes the math
Returns. This is where a gift can go wrong. Hoverfly gives 30 days from delivery, but a change-of-mind return costs a fixed $150 return shipping fee for the T3 or T4 and $250 for the T5, and that fee isn't refunded. Mooncool's pages disagree with each other: its FAQ says trikes can be returned free within 30 days, while its refund policy says sale items are non-refundable and the buyer pays return freight. Almost every trike is on sale right now, so ask Mooncool support in writing before you order.
Shipping. Hoverfly ships free on orders over $59 to the continental U.S. only (no Hawaii, Alaska or P.O. boxes), with 1 to 2 business days of processing plus 3 to 5 days of delivery. Mooncool ships free from San Dimas, California, usually within 1 working day, with 2 to 10 business days of delivery.
Warranty. Hoverfly covers the main parts for 1 year and wear items for 90 days. Mooncool lists a lifetime frame warranty, 2 years on the battery and 1 year on other parts, for the first owner only.
Ordering in time for the holidays
Hoverfly says processing slows to 2 to 3 business days during the holidays and that orders placed on or after December 17 aren't guaranteed to arrive in time. Mooncool hadn't posted a holiday cutoff when we checked. Black Friday is November 27, 2026. As of November 1, Hoverfly is running an Early Black Friday Sale, and its sale page says those prices will stay the same through Black Friday; the T5 at $949.99 is on that page. Mooncool hadn't posted a Black Friday page yet; its Halloween campaign countdown ran to the end of November 1, and it hasn't said what comes next. Our Black Friday page tracks which stores have launched.
Checklist before you buy for a parent
- Ask them. Seat height, how they get on and off, and where they'll ride matter more than any spec.
- Check their weight against the max load: 330 lb on the T4, 450 lb on Mooncool's TK trikes.
- Measure the car trunk and the storage spot.
- Know the return cost before you click buy, and keep the box.
- Have it delivered when someone can inspect it. Mooncool wants shipping damage reported within 5 days.
